What the Committee Has Done Thus Far

- Located 329 of an estimated 363 issues of The Emerald
- Began photocopying formal petitions to charter/recharter
- Located Convocation minutes for the first 10 Biennial Convocations
- Found history-altering correspondence (letters from Founder Rolin R. James, Charlotte N. Mallot, and early members of Tau Phi Delta)
- Conducted a two-hour intel-view with Past Grand Sage Frank C. Fryburg and Honorary Grand Sage James L. Hills (audio recording)
- Sorted through and labeled dozens of photographs
- Properly furnished the museum and research room
- Created "Chronology Binders'' (each binder holds up 600+ pages; it is estimated that this project will require 10 or more binders)
Printed out numbered tabs which divide each time period/biennium

2004-2006 (40th Grand Sage - J. Kitch)
2006-present (41st Grand Sage - L. Rovira)
- Perused 329 issues of The Emerald to ascertain how many of the Fraternity's estimated 260+ charterings/recharterings are covered in the magazine; created a spreadsheet which highlights those that have been covered
- Created a cataloguing system for The Emerald. Every issue since the magazine's inception has been accounted for and is listed in chronological order; contains volume number, issue number, and name of editor
- Volumes 1-111 of The Emerald have been read cover to cover; all pages/articles containing information that will land in the book have been photocopied and inserted into the "Chronology Binders''
- The formal petitions to charter viewed in November were photocopied and inserted into the "Chronology Binders''
Short-term Goals Completed (as of March 2008)
- Made return trip to the Executive Office
----- Was able to photocopy many of the remaining chartering/rechartering petitions; they were then inserted into proper place in "Chronology Binders''
----- Located a number of the remaining Convocation minutes and photocopied for insertion into the "Chronology Binders''
- Put together separate binder that has one tab devoted to each Grand Sage, Honorary Grand Officer, and prominent alumnus in an effort to consolidate all information pulled from the various sources (this will make it easier to construct each individual bio)
Long-term Goals
- Locate the 34 missing issues of The Emerald
- Locate all Grand Council Orders
- Read the 300+ unread issues of The Emerald cover to cover and pull and photocopy all pages/articles containing information that will land in the book; insert photocopies into "Chronology Binders''
- Arrange visit to Byron R. Lewis Historical Library in Vincennes, Indiana to obtain records and documents from BRL's personal collection
- Photocopy remaining chartering/rechartering petitions
Note: All this is necessary before the actual writing process can begin
Challenges
- The Committee is uncertain whether or not more than one volume will be necessary to tell the Fraternity's complete and fantastic story (our projection is that this book will be well over 1,000 pages long)
- Attaching a definitive completion date to the project as the committee is still in the fact-finding/research phase. At some point, the committee will have to research and write a sketch for 21 6 colleges/universities. The committee will also have to edit and have others edit the book to ensure that the language and "feel'' is consistent throughout. The committee will have to contact members from the 35-40 chapters whose charterings/recharterings are not covered in The Emerald in order to have something for those groups in the book.
Other
- Develop a marketing strategy to boost interest and book sales
----- Early ideas include marketing this as "the book every Sigma Pi should have on his coffee table''
----- Possible partnership with the Educational Foundation . . . "for a donation of $1,000 to the Foundation you will receive a free copy of the Fraternity's history book''
- Start dialogue with Heritage Publishers and other publishing companies
----- Solicit quotes
----- Discuss recommendations for format, design, size, etc.
All I want to know is: How do I place an order?
